First of all, what is Plant Based Skin Care?
Have you ever used a facial soap, cream or moisturise and wondered what is actually in that product? Well, you’ll be surprised to know that if you look closely at the small print, you’ll find a lot of additives and even animal-derived ingredients like beetles, for instance, and various other animals that can be found in the products you use. Whilst they have been tested and do not pose a threat to our health that we currently know of, we don’t know what the prolonged exposure effects can be.
And as you can guess, plant based products contain ingredients derived from plants which can be much safer to use, especially in the long run. These ingredients can range from Jojoba to Squalane, for instance, that provide completely natural solutions to your skin care needs.
What are some Plant Based Ingredients?
There are a very wide range of plant based ingredients that can be used for skin care. Here are just a few of the main ingredients found in today’s plant based skin care products:
Carnauba is a wax extracted from the Carnauba plant and helps to make cosmetic products, like lipsticks, non-drying and long wearing as well as having naturally nourishing properties. Another popular plant-based wax that is used in cosmetics is Berry wax.
Squalane comes from olives and is often added to moisturisers to help keep the skin healthy and moisturised. You must be careful not to confuse Squalane with another cosmetic ingredient called Squalene which is in fact animal based and occasionally found in moisturisers and other skin care products. They are almost spelt the same but are very different. Squalene (not squalane) is derived from an endangered species of shark.
Jojoba oil is derived from the Jojoba bushes commonly found in central America. This plant-based skin care ingredient contains a liquid wax which is rich in Omega-7 & 9 which complements the fatty acid profile found in human sebum. When used in skin care, this moisture-retaining ingredient increases skin hydration, helps to balance sebum levels and unclogs pores.
Packed with Phospholipids Lecithin, which can be extracted from vegetable sources, helps the skin to maintain hydration. It is added to creams and lotions and gives them a silky soft feel.
Astaxanthin can be taken as part of a supplement to protect skin against damage from pollution, ultraviolet light and immune stress. It is a form of algae and is 550 times stronger than vitamin E. Therefore, it is known to be the world’s strongest known natural antioxidant!
These are just a small selection of ingredients that are found in plant based skin care products. At the end of the day, if there is a plant based ingredient that does the same job or even better, there is no better alternative but to use plant base ingredients.
